A 13-year-old boy described on Tuesday how he swam for four hours across rough waters near western Australia to seek assistance for his family, a remarkable act praised by rescuers as “superhuman.”
A boy, referred to in local media as Austin Appelbee, swam four kilometers (2.5 miles) across the ocean to sound the alarm following his mother and two younger siblings being carried out to sea.
He spent Friday afternoon kayaking and paddle-boarding on the water with his family.
However, the waves quickly intensified, overturning their boards and causing their kayak to fill with water as they were pulled farther out to sea.
The young teenager told reporters, ‘I was extremely frightened.’
“I was merely contemplating in my mind, believing I would get through. However, I was also reflecting on all my friends at school, as well as those from my Christian youth group,” he said.
I simply stated: ‘Alright, not today, not today, not today. I need to keep moving forward’.

The young person mentioned he began making his way to the shore using only his life jacket but eventually discarded it to swim without any restrictions.
I was quite out of breath, yet I wasn’t aware of how exhausted I felt.
The young boy mentioned he was attempting to recall joyful memories, at one moment humming the “Thomas the Tank Engine” theme tune.
At this moment, you see, the waves are huge, and I don’t have a life jacket. So, I just keep swimming. I do the breaststroke. I do the freestyle. The survival backstroke.
‘Brave fella’
Upon arriving at the beach, the teenager mentioned that he contacted emergency services and requested the deployment of boats, helicopters, and aircraft, informing them: “My family is out at sea.”
Marine rescue volunteer Paul Bresland mentioned that the teenager’s four-hour swim helped save his family, who were later discovered holding onto a paddleboard in the open sea near the tourist city of Quindalup.
“He swam, he believes, the initial two hours while wearing a life jacket,” Bresland said to the national broadcaster.ABC.
And the courageous man believed he wouldn’t survive even with a life jacket, so he removed it and swam for the next two hours without one.
I believed, chap, that’s amazing,” remarked Bresland, referring to the boy’s work as “superhuman.

The boy’s mother, referred to in local media as Joanne, has also received recognition for ensuring her family’s survival during hours spent at sea with her other son, 12-year-old Beau, and eight-year-old daughter Grace.
“It appeared peaceful and quiet at first,” the mother said to journalists.
“One of the most difficult choices I’ve ever faced was telling Austin: ‘Try to reach the shore and find some assistance, this could turn very serious very fast,” the mother was quoted as saying.
“As the sun set, I thought: ‘Something has gone terribly wrong here,’ and my fear was that Austin hadn’t made it,” she said.
Everything passes through your mind.
