Eighteen Senegalese football supporters who were arrested in Morocco and are waiting for trial due to hooliganism during the AFCON final in Rabat have started a hunger strike, according to their attorney. Attorney Patrick Kabou statedAFPon Friday, the detainees have promised to keep the hunger strike going until their case is addressed.
They claimed they are being denied their «right to justice» and that they have been «waiting to find out the charges against them since January 18». Kabou mentioned that the group complained that the police interrogated them in French and Arabic, languages they do not comprehend, as they only speak Wolof.
The detentions occurred after events near the conclusion of the game, when certain Senegalese fans tried to enter the field as a demonstration against a last-minute penalty given to Morocco, causing a temporary stoppage of the match. Items, such as a chair, were also hurled onto the playing area, resulting in injuries to stadium security personnel.
The initial court session held in late January was suspended, and a subsequent hearing planned for Thursday was delayed because of an ongoing strike by lawyers in Morocco. The trial is set to continue next week.
