Shin Jia, an emerging talent in South Korean women’s figure skating and a pupil at Sehwa Girls’ High School, showcased a flawless performance during her Olympic first appearance.

Shin Jia finished in fourth position among 10 participants (total score: 68.80 points) with a technical element score (TES) of 37.93 and an artistic impression score (PCS) of 30.87 in the women’s singles short program during the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics team event, which took place at the Milano Ice Skating Arena in Italy on the 6th, local time. South Korea, after the ice dance rhythm dance team Lim Haena-Kwon Ye, who scored 4 points for seventh place, added 7 points from Shin Jia, resulting in a team total of 11 points and placing seventh in the team standings.

Performing the ‘Nocturne’ in her short program, Shin Jia perfectly carried out her first required element: a triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination jump. She smoothly transitioned into a double Axel, a jump involving two and a half rotations, and executed a flying camel spin at the highest difficulty level, Level 4. After finishing her last jump, which was a triple flip, she ended her performance with a change foot combination spin (Level 4), a step sequence (Level 3), and a layback spin (Level 3). Shin Jia looked pleased, raising her fist in victory.

Top-ranked Sakamoto Kaori from Japan (78.88 points), who has announced her retirement following this competition, won first position in the women’s singles team event. Alysa Liu from the United States (74.90 points) came in second, while Lara Naki Gutman from Italy (71.62 points) finished third.

The Olympic figure skating team competition, a contest among national teams, features 10 nations participating in four categories: men’s and women’s singles, pair skating, and ice dance. Scores ranging from 1 to 10 are given according to placements in each category, with the top five teams qualifying for the finals (free skate/free dance). South Korea, which lacks a pair skating team, has minimal prospects of securing a medal.
