Super Eagles Left-back Felix Agu is getting closer to making a competitive comeback after an extended period out of action. Werder Bremen’s coach, Daniel Thioune, has announced a careful plan for the player’s return following his recovery from a syndesmosis injury, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
The 26-year-old made his debut in Werder Bremen’s game-day roster last weekend for the Bundesliga match against Borussia Monchengladbach.
Nevertheless, he did not come back to the field, as the coaching team believed the time was not yet appropriate for a complete competitive return.
At a press event before Saturday’s game against SC Freiburg, Thioune emphasized that patience continues to be a key part of the club’s strategy.
It was a tough and prolonged injury,” Thioune remarked. “With Felix, we need to be cautious in gradually reintroducing him to playing football.
Although the tone was careful, Thioune emphasized that Agu continues to play a significant role in his strategies.
“He has the potential to influence the game at any moment,” the coach remarked.
Nevertheless, Thioune did not explicitly confirm if the defender would be available for the match against Freiburg, saying, “I don’t know that after 48 hours.”
Although there is uncertainty about Agu’s short-term role, his inclusion in the matchday squad is now certain.
Thioune verified that the left-back will be eligible for selection once more, noting that “we need to take into account the details” when deciding how and when he is deployed.
Agu has been out of action since October of last year following a syndesmosis ligament injury sustained in Werder Bremen’s 1-0 home win against FC St. Pauli.
