The International Atomic Energy Agency, along with Morocco’s OCP Group, has initiated a five-year strategic collaboration designed to boost scientific advancements for sustainable farming, robust food networks, and enhanced soil quality through the Atoms4Food program, which is jointly managed by the IAEA and the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization, according to an announcement made by the IAEA on February 6 in Vienna.
The IAEA stated that the partners will launch a unified research initiative utilizing nuclear and isotopic methods to boost fertilizer effectiveness, increase the nutritional value of crops, and promote more environmentally friendly food systems, with a focus on delivering tangible advantages for farmers, especially in areas dealing with severe food insecurity.
Rafael Mariano Grossi stated that the practical experience of OCP, along with the IAEA’s knowledge in nuclear methods, would aid in creating data and resources to apply fertilizers more effectively, cultivate more nourishing crops, and enhance climate-resistant agricultural systems.
The IAEA stated that research will concentrate on improving the handling of macronutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, as well as micronutrients such as zinc, iron, and selenium, with isotopic data aiding the “4R” nutrient management strategy: right source, right rate, right time, and right place.
Meriem El Asraoui stated that the collaboration would assist researchers and farmers, promoting methods associated with higher productivity, enhanced nutrition, and sustainable environmental management.
