The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Global has given the federal government and associated bodies a 60-day deadline to start comprehensive restoration and cleanup of all contaminated Ijaw areas.
The council cautioned that without any noticeable and tangible steps being taken by the deadline, it would collectively and firmly close down all oil and gas operations in Ijaw regions.
“The Ijaw people will no longer accept the damage to their land, water, means of living, and future,” the council stated in a statement released on Sunday, signed by its President, Dr Alaye Theophilus, after its National Convention in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The conference criticized years of environmental harm, oil contamination, and ecological decline resulting from careless oil and gas development.
Dr. Theophilus revealed the formation of a mobilization and awareness committee aimed at visiting all Ijaw regions, clans, and communities to inform and unite locals in readiness for a unified shutdown if the federal government does not take action.
The IYC also demanded the immediate dismissal of Prof. Nenibarin Zabbey, the project coordinator for the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), claiming he is not familiar with the agency’s purpose and the core reasons for its creation.
The council approved a vote of trust in Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State for his second term and supported President Bola Tinubu for the 2027 election, showing its political stance along with environmental concerns.
