TrialThe selection of athletes from Rivers State for the Niger Delta Games will end on Saturday, February 7, as the football team completes the process, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.

The state competitions started on Monday, February 2, featuring events such as chess, table tennis, tennis, and Scrabble, while handball and wrestling trials took place on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, activities featured volleyball and taekwondo, whereas swimming and powerlifting trials occurred on Thursday, with basketball, boxing, and weightlifting taking place on Friday.

The trials are designed to choose athletes who will compete for Team Rivers in all 16 sports recognized by the Niger Delta Games.

Committee members from the State Liaison Committee stated they were pleased with the athletes’ performances, showing hope for Rivers State’s chances at the regional festival.

The head of sports in Rivers State, Mrs. Ibia Inyengiyikabo, stated that athletes from the region are ready for the competition.

Following the athletics trials in Port Harcourt, she remarked, “We have observed athletes who have the potential to achieve even greater results in the future, and with regular training, we remain hopeful about securing medals.”

Meanwhile, over 120 swimmers took part in the selection program on Thursday in Ondo State ahead of the second edition of the Niger Delta Games.

The hearings, conducted in the Ese-Odo Local Government Area of the state, facilitated the identification of top athletes to compete for the state in the upcoming competitions.

Segun Omoyofunmi, the Chairman of the State Liaison Committee and the Minister for Youth and Sports Development, who spoke to journalists, praised the selection procedure, calling it open and reliable.

“I am highly confident that Ondo State will do well at the games. Thanks to the open screening and selection process, the top athletes have been selected to represent the state,” Omoyofunmi stated.

We need to be rigorous in the selection process if we want to succeed in the competition. I guarantee the governor that we will showcase the state effectively and secure medals at this second installment of the Niger Delta Games.

The final events of the Niger Delta Games are set to take place in Benin City, Edo State, between February 20 and 27, with more than 3,000 athletes and 500 officials anticipated to take part.

The Niger Delta Games is hosted by Dunamis-Icon for the nine states under the Niger Delta Development Commission.
