The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) has achieved a significant milestone in the nation’s Human Spaceflight Programme following the successful conclusion of the second phase of astronaut candidate selection, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Saturday.
As per the military’s media division, two applicants were selected following an initial evaluation in Pakistan and then completed detailed medical, psychological, and aptitude tests at the Chinese Astronauts’ Training Centre (ACC), adhering to global human spaceflight guidelines.
The finalists will now participate in six months of elite astronaut training at the ACC. After finishing the program, one of them will be chosen for a space mission to the Chinese Space Station (CSS), planned for October or November 2026.
The partnership is founded on the two-way Astronaut Cooperation Agreement finalized in February 2025, led by the prime minister, with the objective of allowing Pakistan to engage in human spaceflight.
ISPR stated that the initiative also highlights Beijing’s backing, mentioning that Pakistan has been selected as the initial international partner in China’s astronaut program under its mid-term planning and collaboration framework for the space station.
Previously, a representative from the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) mentioned that preparations for the second round of selections were already in progress, including the creation of training programs, educational resources, equipment setup, and logistical arrangements for the applicants.
Throughout the mission, the chosen astronaut will participate in regular space station activities and conduct scientific experiments representing Pakistan.
The partnership represents a major advancement in the Pakistan-China relationship and underscores growing collaboration between the two nations in the fields of science, technology, and space exploration.
