As Energy Secretary Ed Miliband advocates for net-zero renewable energy, his government department’s headquarters has been discovered to be fueled byfossil fuels.
Information obtained through Freedom of Information (FOI) requests showed that various government departments and agencies, including the Miliband-led Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, have been supporting more affordable ‘brown’ energy.tariffs over ‘green’ energy.
Corin Dalby, the chief executive of Box Power, which gathered the FoI requests, statedThe TimesThe information highlights inconsistency within the core of the government’s energy strategy.
Over 80% of the electricity used in Whitehall comes from a typical grid mixture that includes a large quantity of fossil fuel-based energy, referred to as ‘brown’ power.
A government agency backed by Miliband’s department stated that it had chosen not to adopt green practices due to the low cost-effectiveness of renewable energy tariffs.
Mr. Dalby remarked: ‘Picture it if the Department of Health decided not to purchase nutritious food because chips are cheaper.’
In the meantime, almost half of the councils opt for pricier ‘green’ or ‘carbon-free’ energy, collectively spending an estimated £10 to £20 million more annually compared to regular contracts.
Avoiding the projected additional cost of two to four per cent for green energy, the Mining Remediation Authority, a division under Miliband’s department, acknowledged that it spent £8.5m on ‘brown’ electricity to ‘ensure the best financial return for taxpayers’.

Mr. Dalby added, “This entire situation suggests that either the green tariffs are too expensive, the government doesn’t support its own messages, or its environmental policy is more about publicity than actual implementation.”
A representative from the Department for Energy highlighted a 47 percent decrease in direct emissions from public sector buildings from 1990 to 2024. They stated, “This government has placed clean energy at the center of its plans, drawing in billions of pounds in clean energy funding that will assist the public sector, companies, and families in safeguarding against unstable fossil fuel markets.”
