The court has chosen to stream live the initial trial for former President Yoon Suk-yeol’s treason case, set to begin at 3 p.m. on the 19th.
On the 11th, the Criminal Division 25 of the Seoul Central District Court, led by Judge Jee Kui-youn, stated that it had granted media requests to air the trial.
According to the court’s ruling, the sentencing procedure will be broadcast live, akin to the initial judgments in cases concerning former President Yoon’s alleged interference with his arrest and former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo’s charges of rebellion.
The former president, Yoon, is charged with announcing an unconstitutional and illegal state of emergency on December 3, 2024, failing to fulfill legal conditions, and sending military and police units to the National Assembly and the National Election Commission, thus inciting a disturbance intended to undermine the constitutional framework.
The team of the Special Prosecutor led by Cho Eun-suk requested the death penalty for former President Yoon on the 13th of last month. The special prosecutor referred to the emergency declaration as “an extraordinary event in the constitutional history involving significant damage to the constitutional order by ‘anti-state forces,’” and stated, “Former President Yoon has shown no signs of regret, instead blaming his subordinates, which means the legal minimum sentence of life imprisonment does not correspond with sentencing principles.”
Yoon’s legal team responded, “The limited use of unarmed personnel to convey a message to the public cannot be classified as an insurrection,” and stated, “The effort to detain a current president without following proper legal protocols represents a clear act of insurrection.”
