Daegu City revealed on the 11th that it plans to move forward with building the “Industrial AX Innovation Hub,” a central facility aimed at driving the AI transformation (AX) of local industries within Suseong Alpha City. The initiative seeks to reduce obstacles for local businesses in adopting AI, while promoting Suseong Alpha City as the biggest digital innovation center outside the capital area.
The city of Daegu, in partnership with the Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST), plans to allocate 47.7 billion won from national and municipal funds to create three AX Innovation Centers within the hub, concentrating on emerging sectors such as robotics and mobility, brain-related health care, and smart semiconductors. These centers will offer a comprehensive support system that spans from technological development to validation.
Within the robotics and mobility industry, the city intends to work alongside local businesses to test autonomous and smart manufacturing techniques, boosting productivity and market edge. Regarding healthcare for brain-related conditions, it will back the creation of AI-driven diagnostic and treatment medical equipment through cooperation with nearby hospitals and biotech startups, along with establishing a clinical data system. In the area of intelligent semiconductors, the center will aid local semiconductor firms in developing next-generation chips that feature self-learning and autonomous decision-making features.
This initiative is being carried out in collaboration with the “Regional Hub AX Innovation Technology Development Project,” which is exempt from initial feasibility assessments.
A representative from Daegu City mentioned, “Although more than 90% of local businesses are still in the initial phases of implementing AI, there is significant demand and interest in undergoing transformation. With the help of the Industrial AX Innovation Hub, we aim to develop the conventional manufacturing-focused industrial framework and establish a customized AX support system to achieve the goal of becoming an ‘AX-leading city.’”
Daegu City obtained 8.1 billion won for land purchase via this year’s additional budget and plans to start construction in 2027, with the project expected to be finished by 2029, after going through design contests and administrative processes.
Jeong Ui-gwan, head of Daegu City’s Future Innovation and Growth Division, stated, “The creation of the Industrial AX Innovation Hub marks a significant step for Daegu City to move past its identity as a manufacturing hub and emerge as South Korea’s leading ‘AX-driven city.’ We aim to transform Suseong Alpha City into a vibrant AX environment where AI professionals and businesses from throughout the country come together.”
