Bridging the gap
I have a strong interest in this concept thatThe Witcher 3 will be getting new DLC, almost a decade since the previous one. It’s clear it will serve as a narrative bridge between The Witcher 3 andThe Witcher 4, but I wonder if it will also result in Geralt’s death. I don’t think they’d introduce a new playable character just for a DLC, but eliminating the existing character to pave the way for a new one would be a very clever approach, in my opinion.
I’m aware the voice actor is involved in the upcoming game, but it might just be a flashback or appear as a ghost or similar. That’s my assumption, but I hope whatever role they have is meaningful and valuable, not just a fancy advertisement for the new game. The rumors suggest a new map area, which seems quite exciting.
If this approach proves effective, I genuinely hope other games adopt the same concept. Developers tend to avoid single-player experiences as they don’t consistently generate revenue, but this could alter that trend. It might resemble serialized content, but integrated into a completed game.

Ancillary media
All the talk of God Of War/Santa Monica Studio at the State of PlayI’m really excited about Thursday. I know it’s going to be the most uninteresting choice that will be released (the Vania from another developer), but the truth is that Santa Monica Studio hasn’t announced a new game yet andSonyobviously has something unique in store for this week.

I truly hope it’s a new intellectual property, and I believe there’s a strong possibility, as Sony is much more inclined to provide opportunities compared to most other publishers. I think they have a better understanding than many others that games can serve various purposes, as demonstrated by all their films and television shows. The Twisted Metal franchise has been inactive for years, yet they managed to create an excellent series from it.
KonamiDid the same with Castlevania, now that I think about it, so creating a popular game doesn’t have to be the only thing you do with an idea. We’re at a stage where something might not be popular as a game but could still succeed as a TV series. They were planning to make a Days Gone movie at one point, so Sony clearly understands this.

Science bit
I wouldn’t be surprised if some part of the State of Play focuses on the upcoming PSSR update.PS5This year, if it offers comparable quality upscaling to FSR 4.0 without significantly straining the CPU, it could quickly make the PS5 Pro a more appealing choice. The Switch 2 has demonstrated what is possible with an effective machine-learning upscaler, and it will likely become standard for all new consoles moving forward.
Speaking of which, the latest mobile chips from Intel appear quite impressive. The handheld PC market has somewhat plateaued as most hardware relies on an outdated AMD chipset. A little competition from Intel would be beneficial.

GC: You could be entirely correct about PSSR being in the State of Play.

All that remains
There’s been a lot of discussion recently on GC about the difference between physical and digital.
After downloading all of my old Switch games (I sold my original Switch three years ago, by the way) from myNintendoI’ve transferred my online account to my new Switch 2 and have noticed that Horizon Chase Turbo is missing, but the downloadable content is still present. Do you have any ideas on why this might be happening, GC?
I’m just relieved it was an £18 game and not a £60 one, although I don’t usually purchase non-physical games at full price.

PS: I have attempted to re-download it, but it is asking me to pay once more.
GC:We aren’t certain, have you considered reaching out to the publisher?
Original name
People have been saying All the female characters in Overwatch appear identical. For years, so I suppose this new one was simply the final blow. I don’t really mind that, but I was surprised to learn that they have stopped referring to the game as Overwatch 2 and simply removed the ‘2’ from the name. What a mess.
The haste to achieve a successful live service brings to mind how film studios have all aimed to create their own cinematic universes, even though only one has succeeded and there’s no assurance that others will.
There are certainly more than one successful live service game, so I guess you have that, but it’s still only a small fraction that ever become a major success.
Equally significant, even those that succeed often appear unsure of their approach. Just as the MCU has fallen apart, Overwatch was implementing live service elements before the concept was widely recognized, and now look at its current state. The game is a joke, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they shut it down if this new update (and rebrand!) fails.
At a certain stage, businesses will need to acknowledge that nothing is eternal. We have already lost track of how near Fortnite was to collapse a few years back, but it is certain to occur once more.

I agree that the artistic style inMewgenicsis entirely unappealing. I was really enjoying the idea of it, based on your review, but seeing it in action, I just aren’t interested.

So what’s the likelihood that the name for the next generation Xbox will be extremely unimpressive? I’m predicting Xbox Zero, but there are plenty of worse options (zero referring to the number of customers, obviously).
