A troubled billionaire traveled to Irelandafter a friend noticed his son “walking the streets in a bright pink fur coat” with a “wild expression in his eyes.”

Approximately 24 hours following the critical journey to Ireland, Connecticut financier John McGowanhad died, and his son, the heir, was accused of the murder.

Henry, who was 30 at the time, is accused of murdering his father at the five-star Ballyfin Demesne hotel in Laois in November 2024.

Although he maintained contact with his family, a friend encountered Henry in London and showed great worry about his health.

They contacted the McGowans to inform them that Henry, who typically wears clothes in a traditional manner, was “wandering around the city in a bright pink fake fur coat and appeared to have a crazy expression in his eyes.”

Without a moment’s delay, John reserved a flight to Dublin on November 11, the following destination in Henry’s journey.

He had intended to isolate his son when they met at the airport, but once Henry’s flight arrived, he was nowhere to be found, and his phone’s location data ceased to update.

Henry informed his sister that he had discarded his passport, medication, and mobile device.

He mentioned that he had run more than six miles to get admitted to Mater Misericordiae University Hospital due to his ‘racing thoughts.’

Upon hearing the news, John hurried to the hospital, but the staff informed him that there were no vacant beds.

He reserved a high-end hotel for the evening and intended to visit the hospital they suggested the following day.

Meanwhile, medical helicopter physician Lisa Cunningham communicated with John and his family to assist them in understanding the Irish healthcare system, as they were linked through a common acquaintance.

Cunningham, situated roughly 150 miles from the two, sought advice from a local hospital regarding Henry’s concerning actions.

They considered him to be in immediate need of hospitalization, and the physician passed the details on to the McGowans.

The family contacted John to inform him about Cunningham’s latest strategy – but he was not responding to the call.

After spending many hours contacting the hotel, the police, and John’s mobile phone, they remained unaware of what was occurring.

The family eventually arrived at the police station, and an officer merely stated that “there was bad news,” without offering any specifics.

A family member found a local Irish news story at 11:30 PM, which stated: ‘A man in his 60s passed away following an attack in Co Laois.’

A man in his 30s was taken into custody.

One of the McGowan daughters sent the link to Cunningham, messaging: “Henry killed our father.”

Henry is currently residing at a forensic mental health facility near Dublin, where he has been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, a condition that involves symptoms associated with both bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

John’s offspring recall him as ‘affectionate, genuine, mentally inquisitive, and occasionally playful.’ The father was an avid reader, enjoyed crossword puzzles, and had a passion for sports.

In a message to the Times, the hospital stated: “The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital’s main focus is to lead in compassion, care, and medical treatment for every patient and their loved ones.”

The Maternity Hospital is unable to address specific patient situations due to privacy regulations.
