A well-known Catholic figure within the Archdiocese of Chicago is claiming that Homeland Security officers are halting priests and requiring them to demonstrate their citizenship, solely because of their skin color.

AccordingAccording to Religion News Service, Cardinal Blase Cupich “raised the claim during a Jan. 17 interview with WTTW, a Chicago PBS station, and in a Friday (Feb. 6) interview published in the U.S. edition of El País, a Spanish newspaper. ‘I’ve had some priests who are of a different race being targeted and detained — stopped — because of their race and asked to prove they are citizens. That’s not America,’ Cupich said.told the PBS affiliateWe shouldn’t need to reside in a nation where individuals are constantly required to carry their papers with them.

Cupich added, “It instills fear in a city where not only immigrants, but the general population, feel as if they are being targeted by these roundups. This is truly unprecedented. Such methods are significantly increasing public anger, not only due to the killings in Minneapolis, but also because of what has happened here.”

President Donald Trump invested considerable time intensifying immigration enforcement in Chicago, even though the city’s crime rates wereentering before the procedure started.
