A joint investigative task force (led by Kim Tae-hoon, head of the Daejeon High Prosecutors’ Office) examining claims of coordination between political figures and religious groups questioned former Democratic Party of Korea legislator Lim Jong-seong on the 11th, suspecting him of receiving funds and gifts from the Unification Church.
The task force is said to have started interrogating Lim, who is now considered a suspect, at 9 a.m. today. This is the first time he has been investigated by the task force. Lim is accused of receiving items valued at 30 million South Korean won from the Unification Church before the April 2020 general election (breach of the Political Funds Act).
The former leader of the Unification Church, Yun Young-ho, told special counsel Min Joong-ki in August that the church sought to establish positive connections with politicians from both the ruling and opposition parties, such as Lim, Democratic Party member Chun Jae-soo, and former United Future Party member Kim Kyu-hwan.
Lim is commonly seen as a politician with strong connections to the Unification Church. He held the position of South Korean representative for the International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace (IAPP), an associated group, and participated in several events concerning the church’s planned Korea-Japan undersea tunnel initiative.
The investigative team is anticipated to question Lim about his connection with the Unification Church and if he obtained funds or items.
