The Daily Beast’s “The Swamp” publication states Trump’s announcement of the closureThe John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts was a surprise to everyone — even those in charge of it.

“Reliable sources have informed The Swamp that Trump’s decision caught almost everyone off guard — including, uncomfortably, [Interim Executive Director/President] Ric Grenell and his close associates,” theBeast reported.

“The extent to which this was a total surprise to everyone within the organization, including the president’s office, cannot be emphasized enough,” said an insider regarding Grenell, who took over from long-serving president Deborah Rutter after she was dismissed by Trump last year.

“Extremely low ticket sales” had already led to the cancellation of singer-songwriter Ben Rector’s upcoming performance at the Kennedy Center, as well as the National Symphony Orchestra’s “American Promise” event. Other sources claim the closure was also an effort to weaken the professional labor unions at the Kennedy Center, which are preparing for negotiations during the coming spring and summer.
