A former member of the Seoul City Council, Kim Kyung, who is set to appear before a pre-arrest hearing regarding accusations of a “nomination donation,” said, “I apologize that Rep. Kang Sun-woo’s side keeps making statements that do not align with the truth.” This comment shows her unease, as her account of the events related to the alleged 100 million Korean won donation contradicts Kang’s version.
Kim’s team stated on the 12th, “Instead of getting involved in a pointless dispute about the facts by addressing every one of Representative Kang’s allegations, we have chosen to wait for the legal verdict.”
They stated, “We have already provided all the information we are aware of to the investigative authorities and submitted evidence to support it. We hope the unnecessary discussion will end, and the truth will be clearly shown through the law’s fair decision.”
Kim added, “There is nothing more to conceal, and no justification for keeping anything hidden. If there are missing elements during the investigation or trial, I will thoroughly clarify them and take responsibility as needed.”
In previous police inquiries, Kim and Kang gave different versions regarding the 100 million Korean won donation before the 2022 local elections. Kim states that Kang’s side initially suggested the meeting and mentioned the amount, whereas Kang says she only found cash in a shopping bag that Kim gave her later and then returned it.
Their views also differed on claims of a donation related to the October 2023 by-election for mayor of the Gangseo District in Seoul. Kim is alleged to have tried to hand over shopping bags filled with cash twice between June and September 2023 at Kang’s request, but Kang asserts that she declined or returned them on those same days.
Meanwhile, on the 9th, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office sought arrest warrants for Kang and Kim, facing charges such as violations of the Political Funds Act, breach of trust, and bribery. The review of Kim’s warrant is anticipated to begin as early as this week. Being a current legislator with parliamentary immunity, Kang can only be subject to a warrant review if the National Assembly approves an arrest motion.
