A significant crater measuring 30 meters across appeared on a key highway in Shanghai, China.
As reported by Central Broadcasting Network and The Paper on the 12th, a section of the road near the construction area between Chixinlu Station and Xinzhenlu Station of the subway line close to Hongqiao International Airport collapsed into the ground because of ground subsidence triggered by groundwater seepage around 10:30 a.m. the previous day.
This time’s sinkhole is estimated to measure 30 meters across and 10 meters deep. A video recorded at the scene depicted an eight-lane asphalt road with cracks slowly descending, while construction supplies and temporary container structures on site were being pulled into the ground. Footage also showed water, thought to have escaped from a broken water pipe, surging inside the hole.
No injuries were mentioned. Local officials had been informed about groundwater seepage in the region the previous day and had implemented temporary closure protocols near the construction zone. Workers engaged in the project also swiftly left the area and escaped the incident.
At present, certain parts of the road near the accident location are closed, and entry to some buildings and hospitals is also restricted. The public security traffic management department has advised people traveling through the area to arrange their routes ahead of time and take alternative paths.
