President Joseph Aoun stated on Friday, the day before the anniversary of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri’s assassination, that “a man who devoted his life to the state’s vision” is being remembered, as Lebanon seeks to disarm Hezbollah and expand the state’s control over all regions.

Aoun characterized Hariri as an individual who had faith in the state and devoted his life to restoring Lebanon following a destructive civil war, while also enhancing the nation’s relationships with the Arab and global communities.

Following a conflict with Israel that concluded partially through a ceasefire agreed upon in November 2024, the global community, particularly the United States, urged Lebanon to disband Hezbollah. This action could result in a progressive improvement of relations with the Gulf states and the international community, and could also facilitate the release of aid to the country affected by the crisis and war.

Hariri believed in Lebanon as a nation governed by institutions and (also) believed in harmony among its people. He thought that genuine development starts with investing in individuals, education, and the economy,” Aoun stated, further noting that to pay tribute to his legacy, he reaffirms his dedication to creating “a powerful, fair state that operates under the rule of law, upholds national unity, and prioritizes Lebanon’s interests above everything else.
