Nairobi – President William Ruto has departed the country to attend a significant regional conference on Kenya’s behalf.

The head of state traveled to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Friday, February 13, in the afternoon to participate in the 39th Regular Session of the African Union (AU) Assembly.

Ruto is anticipated to introduce reform ideas centered on Africa and advocate for increased climate and trade commitments.

The conference, held during a period of worldwide financial instability and changing international political relationships, will gather African leaders to determine the continent’s main objectives.

It also aims to speed up the execution ofAgenda 2063, the African Union’s long-term development plan.

In a statement released by the state house spokesperson, Hussein Mohamed, the presidency affirmed that Ruto will have a prominent part in multiple important meetings at the summit.

“President William Ruto is leaving this afternoon for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to attend the 39th Regular Session of the African Union (AU) Assembly, which is taking place during a time of global uncertainty and economic changes, where leaders will define regional priorities and promote Agenda 2063,” Hussein said.

Ruto is anticipated to present an update on initiatives focused on enhancing the Union’s efficiency, trustworthiness, and financial stability.

The reform initiative has remained a central topic in continuous conversations within the continental organization, especially concerning financial systems and improving efficiency to enhance the AU’s independence.

Ruto will also lead the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC), where he will deliver a report detailing Africa’s unified stance on climate initiatives.

The emphasis is anticipated to be on adaptation, strengthening resilience, and climate funding, topics that continue to be vital for African nations.

In recent years, Kenya has emerged as a prominent supporter of climate justice, investment in renewable energy, and creative approaches to climate funding.

“He will also lead the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC) and present its report, strengthening Africa’s unified stance on climate action, adaptation, resilience, and climate funding,” the statement said in part.

The president is set to lead the first gathering of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Committee.

The African Continental Free Trade Area aims to establish a unified African market for products and services, lower tariffs and non-tariff obstacles, and enhance trade within Africa.

During the summit, the president will engage in one-on-one discussions with different leaders and allies, aiming to enhance collaboration and rally backing for Kenya’s key objectives.

“Ruto will conduct bilateral meetings to promote collaborations in trade, investment, health, and security, and gather backing for Kenya’s national transformation plan, which includes infrastructure development, agro-industrial growth through increased irrigation, and energy security,” Hussein added.
