French President Emmanuel Macron called for composure and self-control following the deadly assault on a 23-year-old French man associated with the far-right, which occurred near a conference in the southeastern city of Lyon, carried out by a left-wing politician.

The passing of the young individual, referred to solely as Quentin, has heightened tensions between France’s far-right and hard-left factions, both of whom are looking ahead to the 2027 presidential elections.

He was hospitalized in Lyon on Thursday following an attack while he was reportedly providing security for a protest against the visit of hard-left MEP Rima Hassan to the Lyon campus of Sciences Po university.

The Lyon prosecutor’s office informed AFP on Saturday that he had succumbed to his injuries. An inquiry has been initiated regarding alleged aggravated manslaughter, the statement said.

Macron stated on X that Quentin had fallen victim to “an extraordinary surge of violence.”

“Hostility that leads to death has no room in our nation. I urge for peace, self-control, and dignity,” he further stated.

As per the Nemesis collective, which is associated with the far-right, Quentin was a member of the security team tasked with protecting its activists.

They were protesting the conference hosted by Hassan, who is recognized for her strong criticisms of Israel.

The family’s legal representative stated in a statement that Quentin seemed to have been attacked by “organized and trained people, significantly outnumbering him and equipped with weapons, some of whom had their faces covered.”

Authorities have not released information regarding the conditions surrounding his passing.

Nemesis claimed that members of a local anti-fascist group, which had been outlawed by the government in June, were responsible for the killing.

Three-time presidential hopeful Marine Le Pen, who continues to aim for a 2027 run despite being convicted of corruption, stated on X that those “barbarians responsible for this lynching” should face legal consequences.

The passing of Quentin triggered a surge of worry throughout the political spectrum, with similar anxieties also reaching the hard-left party of Hassan, France Unbowed (LFI).

“What I have been afraid of for years in Lyon is still happening,” said Raphael Arnault, a French parliament member from LFI.

“I express my sympathy to the family of this young individual and I pray that the truth behind this tragedy will come to light,” he added.

Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally (RN) holds the most seats in the French lower house, whereas the LFI is the largest left-wing group.

Following the event, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez called on officials to “heighten awareness at political events, as well as at campaign offices.”
