February 13, 2026 (ADDIS ABABA) – Lawrence Korbandy, the IGAD special envoy for Sudan, refuted on Friday claims that the regional organization favored any side in the nation’s ongoing conflict, characterizing the group as an “honest broker” with a proven track record in mediating disputes.
The remarks were made days after Sudan and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) confirmed Khartoum’s re-admission to the organization after a two-year absence.
In an interview with Sudan Tribune during the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, Korbandy stated that IGAD’s mediation processes were accessible to all parties involved. He contended that the conflict had transcended a national issue and was now affecting regional and global stability.
“Our commitment to integrity and neutrality is absolutely non-negotiable,” Korbandy said.
He characterized Sudan’s return to IGAD as a major move in facilitating discussions between conflicting groups. Prior to the official rejoining, the envoy mentioned that the organization had already communicated with all key parties to develop a plan for a full resolution.
He advocated for secure and unrestricted humanitarian access to every affected region and emphasized that “serious breaches” of international law would not go unnoticed, ensuring those responsible face consequences.
The envoy stated that IGAD continues to be dedicated to promoting an inclusive political discussion among Sudanese parties to conclude the conflict and create a structure for a peaceful political shift.
