He mentioned her nickname “Lamborgil-li,” stating, “Her race strategy was so well-managed that it seemed incredible for a first-time Olympian. Even in the high-pressure environment where split-second choices decide success, she demonstrated both confidence and composure while racing on the track. This significant accomplishment once more highlighted to the world the distinctive strength and perseverance of South Korean short track speed skating.”
He added, “I hope today’s significant accomplishment marks the beginning of a more substantial advancement. I will support her as she keeps up her courageous and strong run, matching her nickname, in every upcoming challenge.”
In conclusion, he stated, “I also extend heartfelt applause to Choi Min-jeong and No Do-hee, who gave their all until the end. All three athletes are the pride and future of South Korean short track speed skating.”
Kim Gil-li, recognized for her remarkable speed, is nicknamed “Lamborgil-li,” a reference to the Italian supercar “Lamborghini.” Interestingly, she earned her first Olympic medal in Italy, the nation associated with her moniker.
At a press event following the race, Kim modestly answered a query regarding her nickname, stating, “I was pleased to compete under the nickname ‘Lamborgil-li,’ which aligns well with Italy, where my first Olympics took place, and I am thankful for having won my first medal.”
Olympic gold medalist Xandra Velzeboer from the Netherlands and silver medalist Courtney Sarault from Canada, who were listening to Kim’s interview, smiled at her nickname “Lamborgil-li.” Sarault remarked, “The nickname ‘Lamborgil-li’ is really cool. I just heard it now, but I think it’s meaningful.” Velzeboer added, “I also agree with Courtney. It’s a fantastic nickname.”
In the women’s 1,000m final held at the Milano Ice Skating Arena in Italy, Kim Gil-li secured third place with a time of 1 minute and 28.614 seconds. This marked her first Olympic medal and the first medal in the women’s short track event at these Olympics. Earlier, during the first semifinal heat, she was in second position when she fell after being pushed by Haener Desmet from Belgium with five laps left. However, Desmet was later disqualified for a violation, enabling Kim to qualify for the final.
