Lee Jeonghyeon, chairman of the People Power Party’s nomination management committee, stated on the 20th, “To be truthful about public opinion, people claim they can’t stand to see our party’s actions and aren’t watching the news at all. If we don’t handle this frustration, the party won’t be able to continue.”
Notably, Lee showed up at the meeting in an olive-green field jacket that looked like a military combat coat, which caught people’s attention. This type of field jacket, typically worn by soldiers outside during battle, is generally known as a military field jacket with numerous large pockets. A representative from the People Power Party stated, “We believe Chairman Lee personally selected the clothing to convey the party’s state of emergency.”

During the committee’s initial meeting, which took place at the People Power Party’s headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul, on the same day in the morning, Lee remarked, “Under these circumstances, regardless of what we say, the public’s support will not come back,” and continued, “The People Power Party is currently at a critical point. The cause of the public’s frustration is evident: We have continuously talked about a crisis without making any real changes.”
Lee stated, “If we conclude this by merely swapping a few individuals, the public will feel even more let down,” and highlighted, “Those who resign for the party’s sake will not be overlooked and will continue alongside us, whereas those who aim to take advantage of the party must be excluded from this selection process.”
He stated, “With the party and the country facing severe challenges, all current officials (local government leaders) are thinking about running for office,” and noted, “They see elections as a way to boost their political influence and gain media attention.” He expressed disapproval, saying, “Some provincial governors, who are less competitive than the party’s approval rating, are eager to run again. Even during this critical crisis, some are focused on personal gain and trying to support their own allies.”

Lee emphasized, “The younger generation needs to drive this transformation,” and suggested, “Let’s create a new political system where youth take the lead, while middle-aged individuals who have developed expertise in the area assume accountability.”
The People Power Party established a nomination committee the previous day to manage the selection of candidates for the June 3 local elections and by-elections. All 10 committee members, including Lee, Vice Chairman Jeong Heeyong (party secretary-general), lawmakers Seo Jiyoung and Choi Soojin, and Yoon Yonggeun, who leads the Seongnam Jungwon District Party in Gyeonggi Province, were present at the meeting held just one day following its creation.
