Eddie Hearnhas expressed that he is ‘heartbroken’ afterConor Benn‘choice to join withDana WhiteHis attire from Zuffa Boxing – and acknowledged that he might have ‘misread the personality’ of the boxer.
A 29-year-old, son of British icon Nigel Benn, unexpectedly declared on Thursday that he is leaving Hearn’s promotion, Matchroom Boxing, following a ten-year association.
Benn, who aspires to claim the WBC welterweight championship, expressed gratitude to Hearn for his support during challenging times in his career and mentioned he is eager for a ‘new chapter’ focused on securing ‘legacy bouts’ on the grandest platforms.
But Hearn, who managed the British boxing star from his 2016 debut to main event appearances and remained loyalhim via a series of unsuccessful drug screenings, has thrown a punch at the fighter.
Speaking to iFL TVFollowing Benn’s surprising declaration, the 46-year-old promoter stated he had been notified of the decision by the boxer’s attorney prior to being denied a call with him.
Me personally, very upset,’ Hearn said about his response to the news. ‘I have had a few days to process what could happen. It’s not often you are taken by surprise.

I hold myself responsible. I had forgotten it was boxing. I just felt that the loyalty we have demonstrated would never put us in this situation.
Hearn mentioned that he had misread Benn’s personality, believing that the loyalty Benn had demonstrated would be sufficient to discuss the matter or reach an agreement.
He continued, “It feels like a bit of a wasted few years. I gave a lot… I believed him and supported him, and I never backed down when he was finished. I lent him hundreds of thousands of pounds, but yeah, moving on.”
I simply believe the approach taken was extremely incorrect,” he added. “However, everyone is different. For some individuals, loyalty holds great importance, while for others, it may not be as significant.
The manner in which it unfolded—receiving an email from the lawyer and then being asked for a call without any desire to engage, leaving you feeling as though you’ve lost a little of your essence.
Benn, who recently secured a rematch win against Chris Eubank Jr in December, made his announcement late Friday night, expressing gratitude to Hearn and Matchroom on social media for all their support.
However, Eubank Jr., who emerged victorious in the initial bout last April, delivered a harsh critique of his former opponent on X.
“So Eddie Hearns (sic) #1 fighter has now left him,” the boxer’s post read.

Eddie stood by Conor Benn in all circumstances, helping him avoid drug-related charges and providing him with money to survive when he had nothing.
I suppose this truly reveals just how much of a scumbag Hearn really is… he saves his fighter’s life and career, yet Conor still doesn’twant to have a connection with him. Or is Benn the lowlife for abandoning the man who helped him? (thinking emoji).
This truly is a dilemma. The worst kind of violence between despicable people… don’t claim I didn’t warn you all.
Benn stated that Zuffa Boxing offered him an opportunity he couldn’t turn down, and he expressed hope that his former promoter could “remain part of my team.”
“I’m full of excitement and eagerness for what lies ahead with Zuffa Boxing,” Benn’s statement continued.
I’m seeking the legendary battles, the most significant events, and the grandest platforms. I don’t fear any opponent at any weight class, and I’m prepared to deliver the fights that the fans have been demanding. I’m at the peak of my abilities, and we have daring, ambitious plans together.
The statement surprised the sporting world, especially considering Matchroom’s choice to support Benn after he failed two drug tests in 2022.
The ongoing support for the promotion during the episode was widely recognized, and Benn eventually made a return to boxing in his home country at the end of 2024.

Amid this context, Benn’s transition to Zuffa—established by UFC chief executive White—seems driven by both monetary and strategic considerations.
The agreement is known within the boxing community to be highly profitable—reportedly a single-fight contract worth eight digits—which would make Benn an unrestricted fighter once more after his debut with Zuffa.
The switch also positions Benn at the heart of the new promoter’s initial goals to draw in top-tier names and organize major events. One of the promising prospects sparking interest is American star Ryan Garcia, whom Benn has been actively seeking for a long time.
The status of Garcia’s promotional arrangement is still unclear, with contradictory statements from Golden Boy Promotions and its founder, Oscar De La Hoya. Garcia has indicated that his contract with Golden Boy is set to end on Sunday, whereas De La Hoya claims several fights are still included in the deal.
The ongoing public exchange, following Benn’s recent agreement with Zuffa, has increased rumors that a Benn-Garcia bout might become one of the promotion’s top attractions if the legal issues are resolved.
It is known that Zuffa is set to organize several events in London during 2026, increasing the possibility of Benn and Garcia leading a major event, as Benn had previously stated that the duo could fill a stadium.
Benn is also anticipated to be present at the venue for Garcia’s upcoming fight against Mario Barrios, potentially leading to a confrontation or promotional event that could heighten excitement about a possible transatlantic matchup.
White described Benn’s recruitment as a ‘significant boost’ for his squad.

“Conor Benn is a total powerhouse and a celebrity,” he stated in a release.
He arrives each time and causes destruction, and now several of the top warriors globally are challenging him.
He’s prepared for a world championship title next, and I can’t wait to watch him fight in Zuffa Boxing.
He will be a significant addition to an expanding group of highly skilled fighters.
