Kathmandu, February 21 — Prime Minister Sushila Karki voiced worries about security and the preservation of tranquility as the country approaches the upcoming elections.

While visiting Rupandehi in Lumbini Province on Saturday to evaluate the electoral conditions, the prime minister cautioned that conflicts among political groups under different excuses might affect the security scenario and emphasized the importance of increased alertness.

I have observed issues in different areas,” Karki stated. “In the Terai, two or three parties are relatively more active and powerful. Efforts to manipulate outcomes of who will triumph and who will fail might lead to conflicts. This has now become a matter of concern for us.

She mentioned that conflicts might arise between the parties themselves, and ordered the security staff to stay ready. “Regardless of whether the situation escalates or not, we need to be prepared,” she stated. “There have already been reports that followers of one party set fire to the flags of another. These kinds of incidents are expected to happen more often in the coming days. Being prepared is essential.”

The leader of the government stated that while certain parties have mentioned the possibility of boycotting the elections, they are very weak and have brought up the boycott as a result of their fear of losing.

My research indicates that there are small groups of just a few people who are unable to participate in elections and have no connection with the general public,” she stated. “We cannot hold everyone responsible. However, some individuals gather funds through coercion and keep the party going merely by declaring they will not run. The party remains active, and financial support keeps flowing. This pattern has been noted.

The Prime Minister, Karki, mentioned that certain people leverage their party membership to advance their commercial or industrial endeavors, and called on the officials to exercise vigilance.

She also voiced worries about the upcoming Holi festival and the risk of weather-related issues, such as possible snowfall in the mountainous areas, especially in Rukum East.
