Doubts around Jon Rahm’s Ryder CupThe future has become highly uncertain following his remarkable decision to turn down a settlement agreement regarding his continuous fines issue with the DP World Tour – even though eight LIV defectors, including Tyrrell Hatton, chose to resolve the conflict.
On Saturday morning, the Tour announced that Hatton, Laurie Canter, Thomas Detry, Tom McKibbin, Adrian Meronk, Victor Perez, David Puig, and Elvis Smylie have all agreed to new contracts, ending the dispute regarding the penalties they faced each time they participated in LIV events.
Within the framework of this agreement, they have agreed to pay penalties that have already accumulated and pledged to participate in additional DPWT events, beyond the four minimum required to maintain their Tour membership, which they abandoned for LIV. Tour insiders see this as a very favorable proposal, particularly since LIV had promised to cover all outstanding fines up to the beginning of this year.
Daily Mail Sport reports that a deadline of Friday was established to agree on the terms, and surprisingly, Rahm has turned them down. For the time being, the former top-ranked player appears set to proceed with ongoing plans for an appeal, which sources say will be handled by an independent entity and may begin before the summer.
If Rahm loses and continues to refuse payment, with his fines expected to reach approximately £2.5 million, he will have to surrender his DPWT membership and consequently lose eligibility for the 2027 Ryder Cup. Interestingly, his LIV teammate Hatton, who had been alongside him in opposing the initiatives, has chosen a different path.
It was only through a lengthy, mutually-beneficial appeals procedure that either of them was allowed to play for Luke Donald’s European team in New York last autumn, but growing frustration was evident on all sides as the matter continued without resolution. Tour officials were surprised that Rahm had chosen to extend the dispute.

Describing the agreement reached with the other eight players, a DPWT statement said: ‘The DP World Tour has provided conditional clearances for eight members to participate in overlapping tournaments on LIV Golf in the 2026 season.’
Every member has agreed to the terms set by the DP World Tour regarding their release, which involve: settling all unpaid fines for violations of the DP World Tour’s rules; taking part in extra designated DP World Tour events, along with related media engagements and promotional efforts; and withdrawing any ongoing appeals.
Those who have received conditional release are: Laurie Canter, Thomas Detry, Tyrrell Hatton, Tom McKibbin, Adrian Meronk, Victor Perez, David Puig, and Elvis Smylie.
The terms that these members have agreed to will add more value to the DP World Tour and benefit all members. As long as each member meets the requirements of their specific releases, no disciplinary measures according to the Regulations will be applied to them for participating in overlapping tournaments on LIV Golf in 2026, and they will keep their membership status.
The releases are valid exclusively for the 2026 season and do not establish any legal precedents. Applications for releases will still be evaluated based on their specific circumstances, following the Regulations that all members have agreed to follow.
Rahm’s administration has been reached out to for a response.
