Leader of the People Power Party, Jang Dong-hyeok, commented on the official formation of a faction within the Democratic Party of Korea on the 23rd, which called for the removal of charges against President Lee Jae Myung, stating, “As the writer Rhyu Si-min once put it, this is nothing short of a reckless move.”

At a Supreme Council meeting convened at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul, on the same day in the morning, Jang remarked, “Today, 104 lawmakers from the Democratic Party of Korea are organizing a ceremony to establish a group advocating for the removal of charges against the president.”

He called for the restart of the president’s trial. Jang said, “The court has already decided that the presidential immunity from being charged does not cover keeping charges, but only relates to starting the prosecution, and thus investigations can take place,” and added, “Although the trial was paused by referencing the immunity from indictment mentioned in the Constitution, the legal grounds for this have entirely vanished, so the trial should continue.”

Supreme Council member Shin Dong-wook also commented on the establishment of a group advocating for the removal of charges within the Democratic Party on the same day, stating, “From a political perspective, it is akin to creating a criminal organization.”

He said, “The 104 lawmakers from the ruling party, pretending to be part of the legislative branch, are traveling across the country and organizing demonstrations calling for the removal of charges, which is basically a coordinated effort to influence the judiciary,” and he added, “This is not what citizens’ funds are intended for lawmakers.”

Supreme Council member Woo Jae-jun also stated, “Before the local elections, the Democratic Party’s efforts to shield Lee Jae Myung are becoming more obvious,” and noted, “It is distressing to witness a legal team of 104 members conducting official events exclusively for President Lee Jae Myung in the National Assembly, a place that should remain open to the public.”

He added, “In a situation where restarting the trial is barely adequate, the lawmakers’ push to invalidate the prosecution is ultimately a political move that directly challenges the principles of separation of powers and the rule of law.”

Meanwhile, the ‘President Lee Jae Myung Dismissal of Charges Group (Gongchumo)’ inside the Democratic Party of Korea is conducting its official launch event at the National Assembly Members’ Office Building on the same day. Led by first-term legislator Lee Geon-tae, who previously served as a defense attorney in the Daejang-dong case, 104 out of 162 Democratic Party lawmakers have participated. Earlier, Rhyu Si-min, former chairman of the Roh Moo-hyun Foundation, commented on this group, stating, “If many people are doing something that seems crazy, either they are crazy or I am, but I don’t believe I am the one who’s crazy.”
