Justices of the Supreme Court who were nominated by the Republican Party are attempting tosave Donald Trump from his own actions, a political commentator has asserted.
A new 6-3 decision opposing Trump’s tariff strategy caused the president to react strongly earlier this week, prompting the administration to implement a global tariff increase of 15%. In reality, the rise amounted to 10%, yet it went against the Supreme Court’s ruling that requires Trump to seek approval from Congress before launching his economic initiatives.
Amanda Marcotte, contributing to Salon’sSubstack, suggested that the decision opposing Trump’s tariffs is more an opportunity for Republican-appointed judges on the court to shield the party — and the president — from additional harm.
She stated, “Don’t be mistaken: the three Republican justices who approved this ruling — Neil Gorsuch, Amy Coney Barrett, and John Roberts — are attempting to protect Trump from his own actions. Voters dislike the tariffs because they accurately see them as a tax that American consumers bear — not foreign nations, as Trump incorrectly asserts.”

Individuals are already frustrated with elevated costs, and they recognize that Trump is exacerbating their difficulties. Even according to Fox News polling, this has become one of Trump’s least favorable topics. A shrewd politician would appreciate the court’s decision, which allows him to abandon a poor policy without acknowledging his mistake.
But Trump is nothing short of a painfully ignorant narcissist. Therefore, he spent the weekend complaining about the decision, eventually implementing a 15% worldwide tax. Acknowledging that he’s mistaken, even to himself, is unbearable — even if this causes his own supporters to begin searching for ways to claim they were never fully committed to the entire Trump/MAGA movement.
Marcotte further proposed that Trump could potentially “harm himself” by bringing up the tariffs vote during his State of the Union speech. However, the speech later today might still be a rather dull event for Trump.
I don’t believe we’ll witness Trump dismissing his team’s guidance and straying far from the script, as he often does during rallies,” Marcotte wrote. “I don’t think we’ll hear one of his long speeches about how uninterested he is in the discussion around ‘affordability’ or how everyone should stop talking about Jeffrey Epstein.
I foresee him reciting from the teleprompter with that disinterested, monotonous tone he adopts when attempting to sound ‘presidential.’ It will be irritating and cause people to fall asleep, but that’s essentially the intention.
