February 22, 2026 (DONGOLA) – On Sunday, the Ministry of Health in the Northern State reported that the number of dengue fever cases in the western part of Merowe locality has reached 80 in 11 days, raising concerns about an outbreak due to insufficient funding for on-the-ground activities.

The Northern State has recently reported isolated instances of mosquito-transmitted illnesses, mainly in the irrigation and farming regions of Merowe. This has led health officials to increase surveillance and on-site actions to stop the issue from developing into a large-scale outbreak zone.

Etmad al-Fadil, head of the General Department of Health Emergencies and Epidemic Control at the ministry, stated to Sudan Tribune that the department documented three new cases today. This increases the total count to 80 infections in the Al-Gharbiya region of the Al-Kurair unit in Merowe locality from February 11 to February 21.

She stated that the ministry has started putting into action a set of preventive measures aimed at curbing the disease’s spread. These involve activating emergency departments at both the ministry and local levels, conducting active case detection within the region, and establishing a “zero reporting” system across all healthcare facilities.

The filmmaker stressed the significance of insect surveys, home checks, and the drying and cleaning of containers and water gathering areas. She also pointed out the necessity of indoor spraying and increasing health education to inform people about the illness and prevention techniques, while engaging the local community in efforts to prevent it.

Al-Fadil recognized obstacles that are impeding field operations, such as insufficient financial resources and a limited number of vehicles to transport staff and emergency response teams to impacted regions.
