The police have internally chosen not to reveal the personal details of the suspect involved in the “Gangbuk Motel Serial Deaths” case, even though an Instagram profile believed to be linked to the suspect, Kim (22), has been circulating online. The account’s number of followers has risen to 10,000, with some internet users commenting on the suspect’s looks, prompting worries about “secondary harm” to the victims.
An online group recently posted the Instagram address that is thought to belong to Kim. By 9 p.m. on the 24th, the account had more than 10,000 followers—about 50 times the number it had a decade ago, which was over 200. The account contains 12 posts, mainly images of a woman believed to be Kim.
The last post, published on the 8th, generated more than 2,100 comments. Although the majority expressed criticism towards the suspect, some individuals wrote, “Honestly, she’s quite attractive. I’d drink the drink too,” “Very pretty, so innocent,” and “She deserves a lighter punishment.” This behavior, in which people are drawn to violent offenders and show empathy or support for them, is referred to as “hybristophilia syndrome.” Opponents claim that such responses celebrate crime and cause additional harm by ignoring the feelings of the victims’ families.

A post dated the 29th of last month, the day following the second incident, also came to light. The woman believed to be the suspect posted two selfies with the caption, “I’m an autumn cool tone.” Hashtags such as “#FollowersWelcome” and “#MatchFollow” were included. Internet users speculated that she might have used these hashtags to connect with unknown people and look for possible targets. Furthermore, Kim’s name, academic background, and other personal information have been circulating online.
Kim is charged with providing drinks laced with benzodiazepine drugs to three men in their 20s, leading to the deaths of two individuals.
Kim is alleged to have committed several offenses between December of last year and the 9th. On December 14 of last year, she is charged with providing a drink laced with drugs to a man she was in a relationship with at a cafe in Namyangju City, Gyeonggi Province, resulting in his injury. The victim was unconscious for two days but eventually recovered.
Later, on the 28th of last month and the 9th, she is alleged to have committed the second and third offenses at a motel in Suyeon-dong, Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, employing the same technique. Both victims in these cases passed away.
Significantly, following the December incident, Kim is said to have posed questions to ChatGPT such as, “What occurs when you combine sleeping pills with alcohol?” “What quantity is considered risky?” and “Can it be fatal?” Authorities discovered that after the first victim regained awareness, she more than doubled the drug amount in later drinks.
Authorities are looking into whether there are more victims aside from the three already confirmed, and they are waiting for the outcome of a psychological evaluation performed on Kim.
