Provincial government provides significant support to women entrepreneurs in KZN
Clapping and cheers echoed through the Marine Building, which overlooks Durban’s bustling harbor, as 25 female business owners from throughout KwaZulu-Natal approached to accept more than just checks, but a show of belief in their aspirations.
The recipients received R1.25 million from the Women Advancement Fund (WAF) in a formal event presided over by KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli, signifying another achievement in the province’s efforts to position women as key players in economic development.
Introduced by the Premier in August 2024, the Women Advancement Fund represents a groundbreaking provincial effort aimed at addressing the systemic challenges that still hinder women in entrepreneurship, including insufficient initial funding, restricted market opportunities, persistent gender discrimination, and inadequate guidance.
In addition to financial assistance, the fund provides recipients with business development services and advice designed to assist companies in transitioning from basic survival strategies to growth-oriented models.
Held on Monday, the event gathered government officials; representatives from Absa Bank, a major supporter of the fund; Nokwazi Shezi, a representative from Human Insight; Sibusiso Ngubane, Acting Director-General in the Office of the Premier; and beneficiaries of the WAF, along with others.
At his keynote speech, Ntuli highlighted the significance of cooperation between government and industry in promoting inclusive economic growth. He thanked Absa Bank for supporting the project, emphasizing that effective public-private partnerships are crucial in enabling women’s economic involvement.
The Prime Minister’s statement went beyond financial support. He emphasized the social challenges that still hinder women’s economic advancement, especially gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), referring to these as barriers that continue to limit women’s complete involvement in development initiatives.
He reasserted the provincial government’s dedication to increase actions aimed at eradicating these societal problems.
“Through the Women Advancement Fund, our aim is to witness women making positive contributions to the province’s and the nation’s economy,” Ntuli stated, encouraging recipients to look beyond regional boundaries and prepare their businesses for national and international markets.
He further urged them to embrace innovation, expand their operations, and seek out opportunities for sustainable development.
One of the recipients, Sindisiwe Dlamini from Nquthu, expressed appreciation for the assistance and commended the provincial government for fostering opportunities for female business owners.
For Dlamini, the moment signified years of determination.
She urged other applicants not to lose hope, stating, “patience and persistence have ultimately led to success for many who now stand proudly as recipients.”
The Women Advancement Fund is included in wider provincial efforts, designed to assist women-led businesses, encourage financial access, and increase women’s involvement in important economic areas throughout KwaZulu-Natal.
When the ceremony ended, it became evident that the event was more than just a transfer of funds; it represented an investment in leadership, strength, and the upcoming generation of women influencing the province’s economic future.SAnews.gov.za
