The former Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has denied claims that Kennedy Agyapong is set to leave the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Kennedy Agyapong served as a six-term member of parliament representing Assin Central in the Central Region of Ghana. On 31 January 2026, he participated in the NPP presidential primary but was defeated by former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

After his loss, there has been a lot of discussion on social media suggesting he is considering leaving the party.
Nevertheless, commenting on Kumasi-based Kessben TV on Monday, 23 February 2026,Kyei-Mensah-BonsuHe mentioned that he has known Kennedy Agyapong for many years and does not think he will leave the NPP.
According to a report seen by GhanaWeb, the former Majority Leader admitted that losing an election can be difficult, but stated he doesn’t think Kennedy Agyapong will leave the NPP just because he didn’t secure the party’s nomination.
“It is difficult to lose an election, but we will begin to engage with him and address the matters at hand. I am aware that no matter what occurs, the Ken I know will not depart from the NPP,” he stated.
He mentioned that the party’s leadership will soon initiate reconciliation talks with Kennedy Agyapong and his group to explore future strategies for taking control from the current government.National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2028.
As per Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the stories regarding Kennedy Agyapong’s departure from the NPP are being circulated by people who are resentful of his loss inthe NPP presidential primary.
“Some individuals, driven by resentment, are responsible for certain rumors, but Ken will not depart,” he stated.
Ken’s camp refutes claims of splitting from NPP
In the meantime, George Sarpong, a central figure of Kennedy Agyapong’s flagbearer campaign, has dismissed reports of a potential split from the NPP.
On a Facebook update posted on Monday, February 16, 2026, George mentioned that Kennedy Agyapong, a six-term former Member of Parliament representing Assin Central, is still part of the NPP.
“The main figure, Ken Ohene Agyapong, has not departed from the New Patriotic Party and has no plans to do so. In his own words, ‘I am a true Party member and I will always cherish the Party I have given so much to. Let the man take a break,’” he stated.
Previously, Kwasi Kwarteng, the representative of Kennedy Agyapong’s team, also stated that the report regarding his boss establishing a new political party is untrue.
In an interview with Joy Prime, Kwasi Kwarteng stated that it would be a demonstration of dishonesty for Kennedy Agyapong to leave the NPP.
“It is not true that if Ken was unable to attend the Thanksgiving Service, it implies he is not supporting the party. The report regarding his formation of a new political party is entirely false. This would be an act of dishonesty,” he said.

Bawumia secures victory in NPP presidential primary
Previously, .gh reported hat Dr Mahamudu Bawumia wonThe NPP’s presidential primary took place on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
He obtained 56.48% of the overall votes to be designated as the party’s candidate for the 2028 presidential race.
Kennedy Agyapong and Dr. Bryan Acheampong received 23.8% and 18.5% of the votes, respectively, trailing Bawumia.
