United States, February 24 — A Nepalese family in the state of Virginia was part of a deadly domestic incident early Monday morning, resulting in the deaths of two women and the suspected perpetrator being shot by law enforcement.

The police force of Fairfax County mentioned that officers arrived at the scene approximately at 5:15am local time in Mantua, within Fairfax County.

The police stated that 50-year-old Chhatra Bahadur Thapa is suspected of attacking his 51-year-old wife, Binda Thapa, and 31-year-old daughter, Mamata Thapa, using a sharp object. Both women succumbed at the location.

Speaking to the media, Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis mentioned that officers arrived soon after the event and discovered the suspect with a blood-covered sharp object.

“We observed the suspect holding a weapon. He was instructed to put it down, but he did not comply. Officers then fired their guns, and the suspect was declared dead,” Davis stated. He characterized the event as extremely troubling and mentioned that a comprehensive investigation is being conducted.

The police mentioned that Thapa had also assaulted his 35-year-old son-in-law, Santosh Kumar Basnet, using the same weapon. Basnet suffered severe injuries and is currently being treated at a local hospital. He hails from Biratnagar.

A one-year-old boy, the child of Mamata and Santosh, emerged from the event without any injuries. Authorities have not provided additional information regarding the youngster but have verified that he is secure and is currently under safeguarding measures.

According to family members, Thapa obtained his permanent residency card on November 12, 2025, and had been residing at his daughter’s residence. He originally came from Belaka Municipality in the Udayapur district.

It is known that Thapa was receiving treatment for mental health issues and had been on medication for an extended time.

After the event, authorities have been looking for close relatives.

The Nepalese Embassy in Washington, DC, has voiced worry and asked family members to reach out. Embassy official Juna Adhikari mentioned that the embassy is working with Nepali community groups throughout the US to find relatives and offer required assistance.

This marks the second instance involving a Nepali family in the United States within the past year. In August of last year, a Nepali man in Dallas, Texas, reportedly shot his wife and their three-year-old son before taking his own life, as stated by U.S. officials.
