A basic image of a person has become popular on X – with users divided on what body part it depicts.

A close-up image depicts an individual adorned with a black leather accessory on a hairy body area, with two distinct fabric colors visible behind them.

It was initially posted on February 22 by user @doxie_gay, and later shared in a now–trending tweet by@ilyasroza. 

“Thought this was a surprisingly thin and hairy neck,” they captioned the picture.

Social media users are confused about what the image displays, with numerous people commenting in the replies to debate the peculiar photograph.

WHAT IS IT” one user responded, while another commented: “Bro I still don’t have a clue what I’m seeing.

Another joke: “I still find it difficult to figure out what this is! Can anyone assist?”

So, are you able to describe what the image actually depicts?

Initially, you may notice a man with a slender, hairy neck, dressed in a beige V-neck shirt and accompanied by a black necklace.

Nevertheless, the image actually displays the man’s right arm, with his hand located inside the pocket of a pair of beige pants.

The item of jewelry is a bracelet, not a necklace.

X user @popeikue has managed to locate what they say is the original photo, which is zoomed out and clearly depicts a man with his hand in his pocket.

The disclosure has astonished numerous users on X.

“Wait. This is a hand inside a pocket. It took me hours,” another user responded.

Another remarked: “Ohhhh that’s a pocket. It took me a moment as well.”

And someone joked, “I’ve been told it’s a hand in a pocket. I know it’s a hand in a pocket. I’ve seen the pictures that show it is a hand in a pocket. My eyes still don’t want to accept that it’s anything other than a long, thin, hairy neck.”

The illusion represents an ‘ambiguous’ or ‘bistable’ image, in which a single picture can be interpreted in two distinct manners.

Other well-known bistable images include the iconic “Rubin’s Vase” illusion or the duck-rabbit drawing.

Every time we observe our surroundings, the brain’s sensory system continuously determines which elements of the environment are significant objects and which are merely part of the background.

Bistable images interfere with these processes by eliminating the signals that assist our brains in differentiating between the foreground and background.

In this specific image, the unusual angle might allow you to perceive either a slender, hairy neck or the real arm disappearing into a pocket.

What makes bistable images intriguing is that you cannot perceive both possible interpretations simultaneously; your brain must select one.
