President Donald Trump is facing criticism forthe incorrect statements he providedlast night, in his address, misrepresenting thetruth about the economy. However, a former Republican leader mentioned that something more severe is occurring.
In an interview with MS NOW’s Katy Tur, co-host Michael Steele stated that voters are already indicating to the nation that the efforts made by Trump are not effective.
“He’s upside down, not only among Americans in general. Independents, he’s lost 43 points with them. He’s also down 16 points within his own supporters. I mean, really,” said Steele.
He mentioned that support within the Republican party could still be strong, but losing any ground is an unusual scenario for Trump.
But here, let’s clarify what we’re discussing. You know this, you’ve always known this, and have followed this person since the moment he first took the stage. Hedoesn’t concern itself with the politicsof politics within the structures and core of a party to get people elected and link that to a larger message, to somewhat pull the slow-moving ones forward—” Steele said before he was interrupted by Tur.
“He shows no concern for Congress,” she stated.
Steele claimed that Trump is solely focused on his own interests.
For individuals involved in Republican Party politics, Trump would never be considered a dependable figure.
“So, if you’re involved in politics, and the leader of your party doesn’t even acknowledge your presence, it means your success isn’t tied to theirs, and vice versa, especially during a congressional cycle when they should be working together. That’s why the Democratic Party ended up losing 63 House seats, or what could happen to the Republicans this November,” said Steele.
Tur stated that Trump has consistently claimed he can achieve everything on his own without requiring assistance from others to reach his objectives. Now, he finds himself in a situation where he controls every branch of Congress, and the Supreme Court is led by conservative justices.
Steele and Tur concluded that Trump is still unable to advance any proposals because Republicans are not willing to collaborate with Democrats on bipartisan bills.
“So, there has been essentially no laws,” he said.
This implies that Trump has rendered House and Senate Republicans “irrelevant,” which ultimately damages their chances of being reelected.
“Here’s the twist. Republicans in the House and Senate have rendered themselves insignificant because, at any critical point, especially following the Supreme Court’s ruling on tariffs, that’s the moment to act. The Supreme Court is returning power to you,” added Steele.
It’s a unique chance to focus on tariffs, Steele stated, and demonstrate to Americans that they are significant once more. However, Speaker Mike Johnson continued to let Trump take charge.
The two likened it to a situation where someone throws a ball and then moves out of the way, allowing it to remain there.
Tur was completely unable to grasp the reason.
“Because they’re little men,” he said. “They play a limited style of baseball. From the start, they always viewed Donald Trump as someone he wasn’t. And they granted him power he didn’t possess because Donald Trump wasn’t present in the districts. He might endorse you, but he’s not running your race. He’s not overseeing your campaign. He’s not helping you get elected. They shaped him into who he is,” Steele concluded.
“And at no point during the process have they concluded that this person is not in our political best interest. The political reasoning behind this became clear when Mitch McConnell chose not to convict following January 6th,” he stated.
