FBI Director Kash Patel’s trip to Italy, funded by taxpayers, for the Olympics involved significant “personal and leisure time,” as per an internal schedule that was leaked to The New York Times. Patel justified the trip, saying it aimed at “enhancing joint counterterrorism cooperation” with European partners. Nonetheless, the leaked schedule showed extended periods set aside for “personal time” and “cultural experiences.” On a particular Saturday, Patel had just a 20-minute meeting with Olympic security, a short tour, and a private lunch with an unidentified guest, after which he spent several hours on personal activities and had a private dinner with unknown individuals. The FBI labeled the leak of the schedule as a “criminal act.” Patel is under continuous examination for potentially misusing public funds, including alleged use of FBI aircraft for personal travel and delaying the agency’s response to a mass shooting at Brown University. Senator Richard Durbin described Patel’s actions as “irresponsible use of resources” at the expense of taxpayers.
