The European Union’s €90 billion loan to Ukraine will be approved “in some form or another,” according to Ursula von der Leyen during her trip to Kyiv, which was mostly overshadowed by Hungary’s sudden decision to block the funding initiative.
“The word cannot be split,” the President of the European Commission stated on Tuesday, referring to the agreement finalized by the 27 EU leaders in December.
We will fulfill the loan in some manner,” she stated. “Let me be absolutely clear, we have various choices, and we will employ them.
Von der Leyen followed with European Council President António Costa and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Costa urged Hungary to “immediately” remove its objection.
“When the European Council reaches an agreement and makes a decision, all member states must work together to carry it out,” Costa stated.
The conflict between Budapest and Kyiv centers around the Druzhba pipeline from the Soviet period, which suffered significant damage in late January due to a drone attack blamed on Russia. When asked if his government would consider fixing the infrastructure, Zelenskyy responded: “To restore it for what? To risk (more) lives? I believe this is a huge cost. That’s all.”
