Chairman Kim Bom-suk of Coupang Inc. participated in the company’s 2025 annual earnings conference call and expressed, “I apologize.” This is the first time Kim, who had previously issued a written apology to Coupang customers after a major data breach, has made a verbal apology to investors. Nevertheless, his comments, such as his statement that he is “proud of Coupang’s team response,” are anticipated to generate debate, as they imply no problems with the company’s management of the situation.

During an investor audio conference call on the 26th (local time) to reveal last year’s financial results, Kim stated, “I would like to apologize once again for the worries and troubles caused by this incident.” Although Kim had issued a written apology following the data breach, this marks the first time he has spoken about the issue publicly.

On that day, Kim said, “We are striving to gain customers’ confidence,” and mentioned, “There is nothing more critical for Coupang than not fulfilling customer expectations.” He also highlighted, “We fully understand that we need to enhance our performance, and we will definitely do so.”

Nevertheless, Kim also showed satisfaction with Coupang’s reaction to the event. He stated, “Although the fourth quarter of last year was a tough time for Coupang, its clients, and business associates, I am especially pleased with how our teams handled it.” He further mentioned, “While maintaining a sharp focus on assisting customers, the Coupang teams managed the data breach and simultaneously worked to enhance our systems.”
