The Ministry of National Defense stated on the 27th that it had elevated and assigned Kim Sun-bong, 49, who previously served as an Armed Forces Organization Officer at the Planning and Management Office, to the role of Defense Advisor, a position at the director-general level.
The Defense Advisor supports the Minister of National Defense in all domestic and international tasks and responsibilities. In the previous month, the ministry updated its structure to rename the position from “Military Advisor” to “Defense Advisor” and permit the selection of senior civil servants from the general service to hold this role. Previously, the Military Advisor position was occupied by an officer of Army general rank.
Concerning the selection of a senior civil servant from the general services rather than an Army general for the position of Defense Advisor, the ministry stated, “This is intended to enhance democratic and institutional oversight in the ‘rebuilding of a people’s military’ and to encourage the balanced growth of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps.”
The newly appointed advisor, Kim, began working in the public sector in 2005 after passing the 48th Higher Civil Service Examination and has previously served in roles such as Head of the Operations Support Division, Head of the Defense Capability Policy Division, Information Planning Officer, Protocol Officer, and Head of the Health Policy Division.
