The leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, Jung Chung-rae, along with the party’s leadership, traveled to Daegu on the 27th.
As per the Democratic Party, on that day, Representative Jung and the party’s leadership honored the 2·28 Democratic Movement Memorial Tower in Dalseo-gu, Daegu, and subsequently convened a Supreme Council meeting at the 2·28 Democratic Movement Memorial Hall in Jung-gu.
This is the second instance in which the Jung Chung-rae leadership has convened a Supreme Council meeting in Daegu since November of last year. The Democratic Party is seen as focusing on Daegu, a key stronghold of the People Power Party, during a period of internal conflict within the People Power Party regarding its leader Jang Dong-hyeok’s refusal to disassociate from former President Yoon Suk-yeol, the removal of former leader Han Dong-hoon, and the party’s position on the special law for the merger of Daegu and Gyeongbuk.
The National Barometer Survey (NBS), carried out by Embrain Public, Kstat Research, Korea Research International, and Hankook Research from the 23rd to 25th, was published the day before. It revealed that the Democratic Party’s approval rating in Daegu and Gyeongbuk stood at 28%, the same as the People Power Party’s. According to this survey, the Democratic Party’s national approval rating increased by 4 percentage points to 45% compared to three weeks earlier, whereas the People Power Party’s rating decreased by 5 percentage points to 17%. This marks the first instance where the People Power Party’s approval rating in the NBS has fallen below 20% since Leader Jang Dong-hyeok assumed leadership.
On the 23rd, Representative Park Ji-won from the Democratic Party participated in SBS Radio’s “Kim Tae-hyun’s Political Show” and commented, “If the People Power Party conducts the upcoming local elections under Jang Dong-hyeok’s leadership, they may only manage to secure one candidate for the Gyeongbuk governor position and could suffer a total loss in other areas.” Representative Park also mentioned, assuming former Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum runs for the Daegu mayoral election, “We will also capture Daegu.”
The NBS study involved wireless phone conversations with 1,002 adults. The margin of error is ±3.1 percentage points with 95% confidence. For more information, visit the National Election Survey Deliberation Commission’s website.
