A collaborative investigative team, led by Kim Tae-hoon, the director of the Daejeon High Prosecutors’ Office, which is examining claims of Shincheonji’s group registration within the People Power Party, carried out a search and seizure at the party’s headquarters on the 27th.

A source with knowledge of the situation stated that the joint investigation team started examining the People Power Party’s Yeouido headquarters in Seoul and a data management firm handling the party’s membership records from the morning of that day. The search order reportedly mentioned concerns about possible breaches of the Political Parties Act and business obstruction by Lee Man-hee, the head of Shincheonji, and others.

Shincheonji is accused of deliberately enrolling its members as party supporters before the People Power Party’s 20th presidential primary in 2021 and the 22nd general election primary in 2024, in an effort to gain political power. A joint investigative group has called former Shincheonji leaders and other individuals as witnesses to examine the reasons and situations surrounding the enrollment of followers as party members. According to the investigation, the team acquired statements suggesting that Shincheonji conducted the membership campaign under the operational name “Pilates,” setting regional targets and overseeing the enrollment process from top management.

The collaborative investigative unit intends to confirm particular information, such as the number of Shincheonji members who are registered as party members, using documents obtained during today’s search and seizure. The team also carried out a search and seizure at Shincheonji’s main headquarters and Peace Training Center on the 30th of the previous month.
