In 1607, France’s Pont Neuf was formally opened for public use. The light gray stones making up its arches tell a tale of Paris dating back to the reign of Henry III.

Now, the bridge spanning the Seine is scheduled to be turned into a rocky monumental illusion by the famousFrench street artist JRwho characterized the project as “possibly the biggest immersive installation ever created.”

The ‘Pont Neuf Cavern’ project will extend 120 meters in length and exceed 17 meters in height.

The “cave” will feature immersive audio and digitally enhanced reality (AR) to enhance the experience of those walking through the space.

Transformation tribute

This is not the first instance of the historic bridge undergoing a major transformation. In 1985, the artist couple Christo and Jean-Claude encased Pont Neuf and its street lamps in a light, silken golden material.

Following a ten-year discussion with the former mayor of Paris, Jacques Chirac, it contributed to shaping the contemporary model for large-scale public art in urban areas.

We are about to leave behind something truly remarkable in the heart of Paris.

JR, a pseudonym derived from his first name, Jean-René, refers to his 2026 project as a tribute to the renowned husband and wife artists who met in Paris. For him, this homage holds both artistic and personal significance, adding extra pressure when working on such a legendary symbol.

“I had the opportunity to meet Christo over the years,” he said. “We had great respect for each other’s work. It’s quite challenging to follow in their footsteps, but I’m doing it in a completely different style, in my own manner,” added JR.

Artnet stated that Paris officials agreed swiftly this time, with Mayor Anne Hidalgo describing the project as a “gift for Paris.” Hidalgo also connected her backing to her personal recollection of 1985.

I saw this remarkable piece of art from a distance, then moved closer and eventually walked through this transformed structure,” she stated. “It was an unforgettable moment filled with poetry and elegance.

A bridge too far

The concept for the cave was developed by the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Foundation, headed by their nephew Vladimir Yavachev, who reached out to JR seeking a fresh perspective, marking the 40th anniversary of the original wrapping in 1985.

The Pont Neuf initiative was initially planned to launch in 2025, but faced a delay until 2026 due to engineering and coordination challenges.

The project’s large scope does not intimidate the well-known artist. He began as a young graffiti artist in Paris, later moving on to photographic installations placed on buildings, bridges, and rooftops.

Among his most renowned creations are a 20-meter-tall sculpture of a baby situated along the U.S.-Mexico border, and his Inside Out initiative, which evolved into an international collaborative effort involving over 600,000 participants.

Humanity remains a core element in JR’s creations, often featuring faces. Although this new project will not include his usual characteristics, he is counting on JR to connect with people’s feelings by altering how they engage with one of Paris’s most well-known symbols.

From afar, he envisions the bridge appearing “as though it has been taken over by a prehistoric rock formation,” a stone structure placed in the midst of a well-known cityscape. When viewed up close, he hopes people will recognize the bridge as an entity with surface details and a sense of history.

In an interview with the City of Paris, he stated thattrompe l’oeil (optical illusion) seeks to bring visitors “as close as possible to the cracks in the bridge,” and to reveal what lies “beneath the surface” of a monument that most people consider background.

Inside, JR has designed a deliberate change in the environment. He mentioned that the tunnel will completely block out sunlight so that guests “will lose sense of time.”

Now, our shadows function as our telephones, our algorithm-driven enclosures that confine us to an alternate version of reality and drive us apart.

Two major contributors will manage the elements that visitors will sense but not visually perceive as they enter the exhibit. “It will be something you’ll only hear from the inside,” saysThomas Bangalter, the former member of Daft Punk, who is composing the music.

The augmented reality layer being created by Snapchat’s AR Studio Paris can be accessed by visitors using their mobile devices.

JR presents the installation as a means to reflect on how we perceive things, what we consider real, and what we overlook when we only view the city via a screen.

However, even though visitors are encouraged to use their phones to engage with the exhibition, JR mentions that one of the most distinctive features of the installation will be the prompt for people to pause, if only briefly.

Our caves today are our phones,” JR said, “because we think that the algorithm on social media is the reality.

The Pont Neuf Cavern will be accessible in Paris between June 6 and June 28, 2026.
