
The Democratic Party of Korea stated on the 2nd that it has confirmed Reps. Kim Young-bae, former Director of the Center for Military Human Rights Kim Hyung-nam, Reps. Park Ju-min, Park Hong-keun, Jeon Hyun-heui, and Seoul Seongdong District Mayor Chong Won-o (listed in alphabetical order) as contenders for the Seoul mayoral primary in the June 3 local elections. The primary will become a five-candidate contest following Rep. Park Hong-keun’s announcement as a minister candidate for the Ministry of Planning and Budget and his subsequent withdrawal from the primary.
Chair of the Democratic Party’s nomination committee, Kim Yi-soo, revealed the candidates competing in the primaries for the positions of Seoul mayor, Ulsan mayor, Gyeonggi governor, and the combined Jeonnam-Gwangju special mayor at the party’s headquarters. All applicants in these four regions have been officially recognized as participants in the primary elections.
For the Gyeonggi gubernatorial primary, contenders are Rep. Kwon Chil-seung, Gyeonggi Governor Kim Dong-yeon, former Rep. Yang Ki-dae, Rep. Choo Mi-ae, and Rep. Han Jun-ho. The Ulsan mayoral contest will include Rep. Kim Sang-wook, former Ulsan Mayor Song Cheol-ho, former Ulsan Standing Representative of the Roh Moo-hyun Foundation Ahn Jae-hyun, and former Cheong Wa Dae official Lee Sun-ho.
The combined position of Jeonnam-Gwangju special mayor was confirmed following the National Assembly’s approval of the integration special law the day before. All applicants for the Gwangju mayor and Jeonnam governor roles were chosen as leading candidates for the first integrated special mayor. In the Gwangju area, the candidates are Gwangju Mayor Kang Gi-jung, Rep. Min Hyung-bae, former Rep. Lee Byung-hoon, and Rep. Jeong Joon-ho. In the Jeonnam area, the candidates include South Jeolla Province Governor Kim Young-rok, Rep. Shin Jeong-hoon, Rep. Lee Gae-ho, and Rep. Ju Cheol-hyeon.

The Democratic Party announced that runoff elections will take place across all four regions. In Seoul and Gyeonggi, the top three candidates will move on to the runoff, whereas in the combined Jeonnam-Gwangju special mayoral race, the top five candidates will advance.
The party also announced plans to conduct an extra public selection process for potential candidates seeking the position of Busan mayor, scheduled from the 9th to the 13th. Lee Jae-sung, the former head of the Busan Party, has already signed up as a prospective candidate, whereas Representative Chun Jae-soo has not yet submitted his application.
