Hyundai Motor Group, in collaboration with the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, is carrying out restoration and environmental enhancement projects for memorial sites honoring Korean War veterans in the Philippines. Hyundai Motor Group stated on the 2nd that it will progressively renovate the “National Heroes’ Cemetery Korean War Memorial” and the “Korean War Memorial Hall” in Manila, starting from March this year. The Philippines was the first Asian nation to decide to send troops during the Korean War, dispatching more than 7,400 personnel, 112 of whom lost their lives in battle. This year signifies the 77th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between South Korea and the Philippines.
A monument, situated inside the Manila National Cemetery in the Philippines, was constructed in 1967. It stands 7 meters high as a triangular column, with the names of 112 deceased soldiers inscribed on it. However, since its last restoration in 2009, it has suffered from wear and cracks in various areas. Hyundai Motor Group will perform crack repairs, replace the surrounding marble, install directional signs, and carry out other related tasks. The Korean War Memorial Hall, located 1.2 kilometers away from the monument, will also have its interior furnishings replaced, with remodeling plans currently under consideration.
Beginning with this initiative in the Philippines, Hyundai Motor Group intends to thoroughly examine environmental enhancements for memorial sites in other countries that took part in the Korean War, in collaboration with the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs. Additionally, they have committed to jointly work together on the preservation and management of historical locations associated with the independence movement located abroad. They will assess the condition of memorial facilities in these countries as well as historical sites related to the independence movement, and explore ways to develop content and revitalize these spaces at the community level.

A representative from the Hyundai Motor Group remarked, “Maintaining memorials for Korean War heroes and historical locations related to the independence movement is a means of passing on historical significance and lessons to coming generations,” and further noted, “We will respect the admirable goals of veterans abroad and independence fighters through collaboration with the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs.”
