The People Power Party on the 2nd called on President Lee Jae Myung to use his veto against the so-called “three judicial laws” (offenses related to the distortion of justice, introduction of constitutional appeals in courts, and increase in judicial staff), which were passed by the ruling party. As part of its demonstrations against this, the party intends to organize a public march on the 3rd.
Leader of the People Power Party, Jang Dong-hyeok, expressed during a Supreme Council meeting at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul, on that morning, “If President Lee Jae Myung possesses even the slightest sense of morality, he should reject all three harmful bills. This is the sole method to carry out the constitutional responsibility given to the president to safeguard the Constitution.”
He stated, “We have witnessed the decline of dictators in Venezuela and Iran. However, the Lee Jae Myung administration is now trying to take a similar route,” and mentioned, “What we believed was impossible has now come true. The judicial system in South Korea is now entirely under the regime’s influence.”
He added, “If March 1, 1919, signified the start of Korea’s independence, March 1, 2026, will be remembered as the day when South Korea’s constitutional system came to an end. The names of every legislator who introduced and backed the three laws that undermined the judiciary will forever be a stain on our history.” He also asserted, “The Lee Jae Myung administration has turned the whole country into a sacrifice for judicial destruction in order to escape their own imprisonment.”
Song Eon-seog, the floor leader, also mentioned on the same day, “The People Power Party calls on President Lee Jae Myung to use his veto power against the three judicial-destruction laws.” He added, “It is widely known that President Lee Jae Myung and the Democratic Party are working together to undermine the judiciary,” but highlighted, “Still, our request for the veto is to encourage President Lee Jae Myung to earnestly fulfill his presidential responsibilities.”
The People Power Party announced plans to initiate outdoor demonstrations from the 3rd. Song said, “As the initial action in our effort to safeguard the democratic republic, we will organize a march urging the public to eliminate the laws that undermine the judiciary tomorrow.”
Choi Soo-jin, the Assembly’s Chief Spokesperson, spoke to journalists the day before, stating, “We will initiate outdoor demonstrations against the three judicial-reform laws starting on the 3rd. These actions will include legislators, party branch leaders outside the assembly, and supporters, with details regarding the time and place to be announced shortly.”
