Moments before the start of the game, a man with an exceptionally long beard smoothly moved away from the group of sponsors and walked off the field, then approachedGabriel Jesus, Arsenalthe team’s leader for the day.
The man raised his phone and requested Jesus to take a selfie. Jesus appeared slightly confused but agreed and the man along with his beard hurried to join the group, celebrating by punching the air.
It was the initial occurrence, yet not the final one, that thePremier Leagueleaders would feel uneasy due to an unforeseen challenge from a team ranked 59 spots lower in the football hierarchy, who are worrying about the possibility of dropping out of League One.
Arsenal ultimately made it through and remain in contention for the Quadruple, but Mansfield managed to secure a victory.Sheffield United and Burnley already in the FA CupThis season, they demonstrated a high standard of football in this fifth-round match, far exceeding their modest ranking.
Almost 10,000 fans filled Field Mill, which they say is the oldest professional football stadium globally, hoping for further success while gazing from the Ian Greaves Stand at the contemporary urban view featuring church towers, railway bridges, and shopping centers.
They were rewarded with an exciting game, a classic “leveller” match in which a Mansfield side coached by Nigel Clough performed like champions and Arsenal held on as the home fans cheered and inspired them.

Mikel Arteta introduced nine alterations to the squad that secured a victory against Brighton during the previous week, with the newcomers featuring two 16-year-old players, Max Dowman and Marli Salmon. Both of them delivered displays marked by impressive maturity, although several other members of the team faced difficulties.
Perhaps some will criticize the pitch conditions. This was not the sort of muddy field that players faced in the 1970s and earlier, but it also wasn’t the smooth, polished surface that Arsenal’s players are used to at Premier League venues or in their training academies.
Leandro Trossard and Riccardo Calafiori’s injuries slightly spoiled Arsenal’s win, but impressive goals from Noni Madueke and substitute Eberechi Eze—both scored during open play, incidentally—proved sufficient for them to progress, enabling the team to focus on their upcoming Champions League match against Bayer Leverkusen.
If the challenge they faced wasn’t already tough enough, Mansfield provided Arsenal with an opportunity within the first four minutes. Liam Roberts attempted to play the ball out of goal but instead sent it directly to Dowman. Dowman moved forward toward the goal, but his shot was blocked.
Following that escape, Mansfield worked to prove themselves and their supporters right. They started to take control of the game, and Rhys Oates lowered his shoulder and broke free from Cristhian Mosquera on the left.
His determined cross was taken by Kepa Arrizabalaga, but it landed directly at Louis Reed’s feet near the penalty area. Opportunity was calling, stretching out its arms, yet despite Reed striking the ball well, it was stopped by Christian Norgaard.
Arsenal appeared increasingly uneasy. Tyler Roberts entered the box and took a low, curving right-footed shot that narrowly missed the left-hand post of Arrizabalaga’s goal. Arrizabalaga didn’t make a move.
Oates was creating numerous difficulties for Riccardo Calafiori on Arsenal’s left side, while Mansfield tested the Arsenal goal with multiple shots. Arsenal encountered eight shots on goal within the first 15 minutes, the highest number they’ve faced in that timeframe during any match this season.
It was a straightforward match. Roberts made outstanding saves from Gabriel Jesus and later from Gabriel Martinelli at close range, then Leandro Trossard passed the ball across goal for Dowman. Dowman was unguarded with just Roberts to overcome, but he struck the ball immediately and managed only a weak shot directly at the goalkeeper.

Arsenal faced a setback eight minutes before the break when Trossard collapsed in the center of the field and was replaced. However, two minutes later, despite the flow of the game, Arsenal managed to score.
Roberts blocked a low attempt, but Martinelli recovered the ball and passed it back to Noni Madueke. Madueke struck it immediately, with a graceful flick of his left foot, sending the ball curving past Roberts’ dive and into the top corner of the goal.
Arsenal introduced Will Evans in place of Tyler Roberts at halftime, and just four minutes into the second half, Evans equalized for Mansfield. Salmon, who had shown impressive maturity in his performance, passed the ball back toward Mosquera, but Mosquera hesitated, allowing Evans to seize the opportunity.
Evans brought Mosquera down, moved past him with a quick maneuver, and struck a low left-footed shot that went past Arrizabalaga and into the far corner. On the sideline, Clough raised his arms in excitement.
Dowman nearly restored Arsenal’s advantage right away. He moved past the Mansfield defense with a flash of talent and rapid footwork, and his shot was on target until Roberts made an outstanding save, deflecting it away.
In the middle of the half, Arsenal created the standout moment of the match. Dowman and Madueke worked together seamlessly in the center of the field, with Madueke sprinting forward and passing the ball to Dowman on the flank. Dowman’s cross was met by Jesus, who had a chance to score but his shot was feeble, and Kyle Knoyle managed to head it off the line.
It was just a short break for the Stags. Arsenal moved the ball into the Mansfield zone, and Eberechi Eze, who had recently entered the game in place of Kai Havertz, created some room for himself and fired an unstopable shot into the upper corner. It was a display of top-tier skill.
Bukayo Saka, brought on as a late replacement, might have increased Arsenal’s lead, but that would have been unjust to the League One team, who had challenged the Premier League leaders closely.
