Television hitmaker Ryan Murphyhas made a comeback with his newest polished television biographical series, Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette.

Set in the setting of 1990s New York City, it delves intothe relationship between JFK Jr. and his future wife, Carolyn Bessette, who both passed away in a tragic plane crash in 1999.

Adapted from a novel by Elizabeth Beller, the drama also includes Hollywood actor Daryl Hannah, portrayed by model and actress Dree Hemingway.

Hannah became well-known in the 1980s through her performances inBlade Runner and beloved mermaid romcom Splash, prior to portraying the villainous assassin Elle Driver inQuentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill films.

Hannah was in a relationship with the son of an assassinated U.S. president during the 1990s, yet she has expressed disapproval of Murphy’s depiction of her character in the television show.

Referring to the show’s depiction of her as “not even remotely accurate,” she proceeded to counter five specific claims that she labeled as “completely false.”

In a fiery article for theNew York Times, Hannah referred to the show as ‘television that exploits tragedy,’ depicting her character as ‘annoying, self-centered, complaining, and unsuitable.’

Describing the decision as “no coincidence,” she added, “Storytelling depends on conflict. It frequently needs a challenge. However, a genuine, living individual is not just a tool for the story.”

Explaining how the film elevates Bessette by destroying her character, she said: ‘Isn’t it classic sexism to undermine one woman in order to elevate another?’

Mentioning particular occurrences in the series, she stated: ‘I have never utilizedcocaineIn my life, I have not hosted parties fueled by cocaine. I have never forced anyone into marriage. I have never damaged any family heirloom or entered a private memorial. I have never planted any story in the media. I never likened Jacqueline Onassis’ death to that of a dog.

“These are not imaginative additions to character. They are claims about behavior—and they are untrue,” she wrote.

She further stated that she had been getting ‘hostile’ and ‘intimidating’ messages since the program was broadcast.

Empathizing with Hannah’s situation, audiences have expressed their disappointment regarding the show’s portrayal of events on social media.

X user GhostMellie noted that Murphy “has never been capable of showing respect to anyone involved,” while SoapsandSciFi stated that the show was filled with “sickness and resentment.”

Speaking about his 2022 film about a serial killer, NotMikeHarlow quipped that “Jeffrey Dahmer was depicted in a more positive light than they’ve done for her!”

“Perhaps Daryl Hannah can finally put an end to Ryan Murphy,” added greatestdisease.

Despite the continuous debate, Love Story has generally been well-received by both critics and audiences, earning an 80% ‘fresh’ rating on the review site Rotten Tomatoes.

This includes ’sown Rebecca Cook, calling it ‘captivating’ and ‘brilliant’in our assessment of the series.

This comes soon afterThe nephew of JFK Jr., Jack Schlossberg, labeled the program ‘disturbing.’

Appearing on CBS Sunday Morning, the 33-year-old stated: ‘If you want to speak to someone who hasn’t met anyone in my family and knows nothing about us, talk to Ryan Murphy.’

Referring to the show as “capital F for fiction,” he remarked, “The person has no idea what they’re discussing, and they’re earning a lot of money from a disturbing portrayal of someone else’s life,” he criticized.

He proposed that Murphy “contribute some of the millions in profits he is earning to the causes that John supported,” and assist in preserving the legacy of Jr.’s father, the assassinated President JFK.

“This is not a factual film,” he stated.

Love Story is the newest work by Murphy, which has faced debate due to its depiction of actual individuals.

In 2017, 101-year-old actress Olivia de Havilland took legal action against Murphy and FX, claiming that her image was used without permission in the series Feud: Bette and Joan, which harmed her reputation.

Although she argued that the program had portrayed her in a poor manner, a judge eventually decided in Murphy’s favor, referencing freedom of speech safeguards.

In 2022, his Netflixseries Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Storywas criticized by the familiesregarding the serial killer’s victims for its lack of sensitivity and apparent romanticization of the perpetrator.

Subsequent series delved into the lives and offenses of brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez, andmurderer and grave digger Ed Gein– encountering comparable criticism for dramatizing actual occurrences.

In reaction to the controversy surrounding his Jeffrey Dahmer story, Murphy stated at that time: ‘We weren’t particularly focused on Dahmer the monster.’

It was about who was involved in creating the monster. There were numerous factors at play. It was a complex human story. It addressed systemicracism, homophobia. We were constantly considering the victims.
