President Donald Trump is showing a “shruggy nihilism” regarding the large number of deaths resulting from his policies, according to a senior editor who wrote on Friday — and the situation is deteriorating.
Trump has reportedly been responsible for the deaths of 787 Iranians, among them at least 175 children at an elementary school close to a naval installation, as well as at least six American military personnel.authored by Inae Oh, senior news and engagement editor at Mother JonesShe mentioned that by Friday, over 120 individuals in Lebanon had lost their lives as the conflict spreads across the Middle East.
Although the number of fatalities continues to rise, Oh observed that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is eager to talk about the effectiveness of weapons, except when it comes to American casualties.
The media is solely interested in portraying the president negatively,” Hegseth said. In contrast, Oh noted that Trump exhibits a “shruggy nihilism” regarding the increasing number of deaths, such as when he answered a question about retaliatory strikes harming Americans by saying “I guess.
Trump then said, “But I believe they are constantly concerned about it. We think about it constantly. We prepare for it. But yes, you know, we anticipate certain outcomes. As I mentioned, some people will lose their lives. When you engage in war, some individuals will die.”
Oh stated that “in contrast to Hegseth, who seems intoxicated by his performance while craving death, Trump’s views on death here are strangely calm. They stand out because they seem to show almost no critical thought. No, this is not someone who is even slightly concerned about mass casualties. He just doesn’t care.”
Oh is not the only commentator who has observed what appears to be morally corrupt behavior from Trump and his administration. Writing for the conservative publication The Bulwark, Joe Perticonearguedthat it was incorrect for the administration to permit prediction markets to wager on the conflict.
Similar to dogfighting, betting on war is a type of activity that is best explained in straightforward moral terms,” Perticone stated. “(‘Satanic’ was the word that popped into my head.) However, I wanted to raise the issue of regulating or prohibiting this industry with some lawmakers who are acquainted with prediction markets.
In general, the conflict in Iran is becoming more and morenot popular with Trump’s conservative supporters.
Since Donald Trump initiated Operation Epic Fury last week,” Michael Warren from The Dispatch stated, “one fact has become evident: the most staunchly MAGA media outlets are not supporting the president. Nowhere is this more evident than on ‘War Room,’ the live show hosted by Steve Bannon that combines news commentary with on-air strategic discussions for the new right. Beginning with two days of urgent broadcasts over the weekend, Bannon has been joined by his usual guests to offer balanced military insights and, more recently, subtly worded cautions that a prolonged military action in Iran would be a disastrous decision…. Bannon, ever mindful of the MAGA base, expressed particular concern.
Historian Phillips Payson O’Brien from the University of St. Andrews recently cautioned The Atlantic that the U.S. military is experiencing a decline in its effectiveness, partly due to weak leadership at the highest levels.
When a complicated system begins to deteriorate, the initial indicators are often faint,O’Brien argued“In the third century, following the period when the Roman Empire had achieved its greatest territorial extent, literacy started to decrease throughout Roman society. The level of education dropped not only among soldiers but also among officers, the aristocracy, and even emperors. The Roman army remained impressive for many years afterward. It possessed quality equipment and was capable of marching effectively. However, it was no longer as technologically superior compared to Rome’s adversaries as it had been previously. The army fought with the same determination, but its effectiveness diminished.”
