Weather conditions in Moroccoare anticipated to stay fluctuating and unpredictable in the next few days as the nation moves from winter to spring, according to theGeneral Directorate of Meteorology.
The country’s weather service stated that this time of year is usually characterized by quick changes in the weather because of the mixing of various air masses.
Over the weekend, Morocco will continue to be affected by a relatively weak Atlantic low-pressure area located to the south of theIberian Peninsula, enabling moist western air currents to flow towards the northern and central regions of the country.
This system is anticipated to result in passing clouds and intermittent isolated rain, especially in theRif Mountains, the Middle Atlas, and sections of the northern plains. Light snowfall could be experienced on mountain summits, whereas the southern areas will see more consistent weather conditions.
According to Hussein Youabed, communication officer at the meteorological directorate, the area of low pressure is anticipated to slowly move towards the western Mediterranean on Sunday.
This phenomenon will ensure northern Morocco remains under the effect of an upper-level trough, leading to continued cold and variable weather conditions, with light, scattered rain and potential for thunderstorms, especially in mountainous and eastern regions. Increased wind activity could also occur as a result of pressure variations between the northern low-pressure system and a subtropical high further south.
Short-term enhancement scheduled for next week
Meteorological conditions are anticipated to show a minor improvement at the beginning of the following week as the low-pressure area diminishes and shifts towards the east.
Nevertheless, a few scattered clouds might result in intermittent light rain in the northern areas and the Middle Atlas. Low clouds and isolated fog could also develop during the morning.
Starting from Tuesday, Morocco might face unsettled weather conditions as a cut-off low-pressure system, along with cold air masses, moves into the upper atmosphere. This might lead to rain showers in northern and central areas as well as mountainous regions on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Cold air movements are also anticipated to continue, maintaining lower temperatures throughout the area.Atlas Mountains, the Rif Mountains, and the Eastern Morocco’s High Plateaus, where snowfall may occur at higher altitudes.
Weather experts also issued alerts about increased wind speeds in various regions, especially in the southern provinces, eastern areas, and along the central Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines.
These breezes could come with dust and sand, possibly limiting sight in the areas impacted.
Temperature levels differ among various areas
Early in the week, chilly weather is anticipated to continue throughout the mornings and nights in elevated areas.
Low-lying clouds could develop across the northern and central plains, covering theSaiss Plain and the Phosphate Plateau, with the chance of fog or light rain.
Later in the evening, scattered clouds may lead to light rain in regions to the north ofEssaouira, the Saiss region and parts of the Middle Atlas, as well as plains located to the west of theHigh Atlas.
Some areas in eastern Morocco and the southeast will experience a slight decrease in temperatures, whereas the Sahara will see more consistent conditions. In other regions, a slow increase in daytime temperatures is anticipated.
Weather experts indicate that the unpredictable weather conditions may continue in the northern part of the country throughout the week, featuring intermittent cloud cover, rain, and snow in higher elevation regions.
Temperatures are expected to slowly rise again by the end of next week, approximately on March 14–15.
